In society, people are grouped and placed into categories with others
they have common backgrounds, demographics, and features. This was not
created by an elite group, but is how we as humans find comfort and
relate to one another. Those with access to more resources have the
ability to give their group power over others. This can be seen across
history, from the Roman Empire, South Africa, the Sunni and Shi'a
conflict in the Middle East, and the domination of Whites, specifically
in the United States.
In America today we find many fighting for
equality and the ability to access the same basic resources as everyone
else. But, what about those who are unable to fight for themselves, or
are not granted the rights because of their perception in society. This
is where social workers come in. Social work is not just a profession.
It is a position for the rights and equality for those who are not given
proper care or have restricted resources. Advocating and lobbying is
the basic form of bringing awareness and attention to the truth to
peoples pushed to the side and cast out of society.
The main
objective of this blog is education, because without education we become
susceptible to stereotypes and the stigmatization given to peoples we
have no experience. This will be provided through insight and first-hand
experience to help society to make better decisions and to grasp the
full picture and not just one aspect of someone's life. We all provide
help and services to many we never see and those we do not care to know.
Through donations, charity, and taxes and laws, society takes care of
groups of people behind the scenes. It is this purpose that I aim to
bring these groups and their situations to the forefront of public
knowledge. With a better understanding, more will be helped through
programs, receive better care and services, and more people will be
given the opportunity than ever before, to live a quality of life that
is satisfactory.
